The Green Monastery
In the Borjomi Gorge, in the most beautiful place is there is the Monastery of St. George. People affectionately call it the “Green Monastery”, because all the trees in the gorge differ in shades of green, as well as the stones from which the monastery was built. They are all green, but some are darker, while the others are lighter.
Under the assumptions of the scientists, the church was built by the students of the famous Georgian figure St. Grigol Khandzteli – Christopher and Theodore.
In the 16th century, during the invasion of Shah Tamaz, the monastery was plundered. Dozens of monks were killed or tortured. The blood spilled by the monks thrown into the river Chitahevi was absorbed by stones. These bloodstones lie almost along the entire length of the river flowing along the territory of the monastery.
A bell tower was later built few meters from the monastery. It is a two-story building, on the ground floor there is a chapel, and on the second floor there is a richly decorated gazebo. On one of the eastern faces, under the arch, there is a relief image of St. George’s struggle with the whale.
For centuries, worship in the temple was not conducted. In the 80s of last century the church was restored. And in 2002, after many centuries, the monastery began to operate.
The Rabati Fortress
A large fortress in the city of Akhaltsikhe, recently globally reconstructed. The last and most ambitious project of the Saakashvili era, which still causes much controversy. It is one of the main attractions of the Samtskhe-Javakheti region, alongside Vardzia. There are rumors, that during the reconstruction of Rabat, they tried to make it look a bit like Jerusalem. Now on the territory of the fortress there is a hotel, a museum, a wine shop and an information center.
This historical object appears in the top rows of the list of tourist meccas of Georgia. Cave cities are generally popular, and Vardzia is second only to Uplistsikhe in popularity. However, Uplistsikhe in many respects wins from being closer to the capital. Everyone recognizes that Vardzia feels unique and special in sensations. It is located in the area of Aspindza, 60 kilometers from the city of Akhaltsikhe. In addition to the monastery itself, there are a lot of sights in the Vardzia gorge – several cave complexes, a fortress, temples and so on.
