The monastery is 9 kilometers from the center of Telavi, practically at the very roadside of Telavi, one of the main attractions on this route. The monastery was founded in the 16th century near the monastery of Old Shuamta. It is somewhat less interesting than “Old”, but it has a number of valuable features
Otherwise called the monastery complex of Ikalto, by the name of the nearest village near Telavi. This is a small monastery, there are only three churches and a household building. In the past, the monastery also housed the Academy, so Ikalto is a kind of logical pair with the Gelati monastery. However, Ikalto is much older. Ikalto is a pretty, compact monastic complex, frequently visited by tourists
A monastery and a cathedral, officially the St. George’s Cathedral in the Akhmeta district of Kakheti. The cathedral is the second tallest in Georgia, the first among the preserved medieval cathedrals and the highest of the four “Great Cathedrals” (although the Bagrat temple after the reconstruction was 2 meters higher than Alaverdi). This is the main and most respected temple in Kakheti, the center of the Alaverdi eparchy.
A castle of the 15th-17th centuries, a popular tourist site in Kakheti. Strictly speaking, this is not a castle, but rather a temple complex, but in the literature it has long been called a castle, so we will preserve the traditional classification. Gremi is a visiting card of Kakheti, a brand attraction, where all tourists necessarily travel. On the scales of all Georgia, it competes with Ananuri for the glory of the most famous castle of the country.
Artificial pond in the Alazani Valley, near the town of Kvareli. It is filled with a noisy river Duruji, carrying its waters among the picturesque mountain ranges and vineyards of Saperavi. The lake received its name in honor of Ilya Chavchavadze, a well-known Georgian writer of the early 20th century. A comfortable hotel resembling a small medieval castle was built on its shore. The tourists can enjoy a beautiful park, amphitheater, cozy cafes and restaurants. Here you can have a great rest, do various sports, have fun and go boating, take delight of the beautiful scenery. Lake Ilya was opened in 2011, so its infrastructure continues to develop. In the center of the reservoir there is an artificial island with a beautiful coastal strip.
Kakheti city (since 1964) with a population of 8600 people, the capital of the eponymous area. It is famous for the wine “Kindzmarauli”, the house of Ilya Chavchavadze and the Kvareli lake. A good, informative city, where there already are hotels, cafes, and a quality information center. In Kvareli it makes sense to live a day or two or even make it a base for exploring the adjoining parts of Kakheti. From Tbilisi to Kvareli – a little more than 150 kilometers, depending on the choice of the road.
