The river originates on the southern slopes of the Main Caucasian Range. In the beginning, the river is called White (Mtiuluri) Aragvi. It flows through the clay and limestone, which give the water a whitish shade. Near the village of Pasanauri, the White Aragvi joins the Black Aragvi, which flows through the black shale, causing the water to have a dark shade. After the confluence, the water in the river forms two parallel strips along some length – light and dark. Further the river is called simply Aragvi. In the Zhinvali Village the Aragvi is joined by the Pshavuri Aragvi, which flows down from the western slopes of Mount Barbalo and has a northern influx – the Hevsuretian Aragvi. The mixed water of the four Aragvi rivers created the most beautiful place in Georgia – the Zhinvali water reservoir with the hydroelectric power stations, which provide the Georgian capital with water and electricity. In the city of Mtskheta – the ancient capital of Georgia – Iberia, Aragvi flows into the Kura. The water sources of the river are various, but mostly glacial. The Georgian Military Highway passes along the Aragvi valley.

The Sno Fortress
It’s not quite an ordinary fortress, because they erected it right on top of the cliff. Wise Georgian builders of that time correctly calculated the place of building the fortress. In spite of the fact that the fortress itself is of small size, its location makes it hard for enemies to reach. Who built the fortress, to whom it belonged – no one has yet succeeded in finding out so far. However, there is a legend in these places, which says that during one of the battles under the leadership of Vakhtang Gorgasali, his warrior named Sno showed extraordinary courage. When Vakhtang himself had a son, he, without hesitation, named him the name of this glorious brave warrior, and in honor of his son built a fortress on the mountain in the canyon and called it Sno, too, believing that this name will surely protect the fortress from all enemies and from destruction.
The Trinity Church
The cross-domed church, built in the XIV century. The only temple of this type in the Kazbegi district. It is located high on the mountain above the village of Gergeti and the town of Stepantsminda.”… The white ragged clouds were dragged across the top of the mountain, and a solitary monastery, illuminated by the rays of the sun, seemed to float in the air, carried by clouds” (A.S. Pushkin, 1829)
The Gergeti Sameba is an amazing temple. This is a rare case of a temple high in the mountains, at an altitude of 2,170 meters above sea level. An unusual combination of architecture and snow. It can be beautifully photographed against the background of the glaciers of the Kazbegi Mountain. In July, crowds of people gather here for the holiday of Gergetoba.
